The Last Wolf

BACKYARD ULTRA

OCTOBER 10th, 2026 | KINGS MOUNTIAN, NC

THE GRIT INDEX

The Last Wolf is a psychological battlefield that flips the standard backyard ultra on its head. Located on the rugged trails of Kings Mountain, NC, this mission is defined by the ‘Expanding Clock’—a cycle where time is given and then violently taken away. Starting with a 40-minute 5K loop that stretches to 60 minutes before resetting, this format rewards the NC endurance athlete who can manage their heart rate and their ego. There is no guaranteed winner here; only a final pursuit where one runner must face the clock alone to claim the title. In the shadow of the Piedmont peaks, you’ll learn that strategy is just as lethal as speed.

THE MISSION:
KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC

The Last Wolf is not your typical backyard ultra; it is a tactical experiment in endurance held on the historic, technical terrain of Kings Mountain, NC. While most formats demand a static hourly loop, The Last Wolf utilizes an oscillating clock that tests the Charlotte-area trail running community in a whole new way. Runners begin with a 40-minute window to complete a 3.1-mile (5K) loop, with the time limit increasing by five minutes every lap until it reaches an hour. Just as the rhythm begins to feel comfortable, the clock resets to 40 minutes, punishing those who settled into a slow pace and rewarding the endurance athlete who kept their engine primed for the shift.

This mission is a “Death by a Thousand Resets,” designed to strip away the comfort of a steady gait and force a psychological confrontation with the ticking clock. Without the aid of trekking poles and facing the unpredictable weather of the NC Piedmont, participants must navigate the “Loop of Glory” until only one remains. However, victory is never promised. To be crowned the Last Wolf, the final survivor must complete a solo loop within the current cutoff; if the clock wins, the race ends with no victor. This is a high-stakes pursuit of status where every handmade pottery medal is as unique as the strategy used to earn it.

The Stone Mountain Massacre is a vertical confrontation against the silent, towering presence of Stone Mountain State Park, NC. This quest demands total psychological and physical commitment. The course is anchored by relentless granite ascents that strip away everything but a runner’s core grit before plunging back into the technical roots and rock of the forest floor.

Central to this mission is the Stone Collection—a strict ritual where finishers must earn their place. Runners are required to collect a specific stone at every designated aid station. Missing even one signifies a failure in the mission and results in an automatic DNF. To hold the complete set at the finish is the only way to prove you conquered the mountain’s judgment.
